Os Mutantes: a new religion?

Os Mutantes frontman Sergio Dias may be a god within the tropicalia movement, but that doesn't translate to real life, right? Not necessarily. The exuberant 57-year-old was dressed like a Zorro priest during his Philly stop at the World Cafe Live.

Instead of a crucifix, Dias wore a gold maple leaf -- perhaps he pledges his true alliance to Canada?

De Leon gives hope to frat boys planning their Halloween costumes everywhere

De Leon's Dan Saks is the poor man's Justin Timberlake: soulful tunes, smooth dance moves, and the insatiable trio of v-neck, vest and fedora.

This is a hard look to pull off, and 90% of people who attempt it look like total assholes. But Saks makes it work, because he has that certain je ne sais quoi.

Foreign Born Totally Freel Your Groove, Man

Foreign Born are a Los Angeles-based indie rock group, whose lush, island tunes will make you feel like catching a wave across Rainbow beach, where the sun is a volleyball and the clouds are made of snow-cone.

They're also funky dressers, equally inspired by the '60s and their own imaginations:

Nothing says summer like nature-inspired patterns and a little old-school psychedelia!

Handsome Furs, Handsome Fashions

Alexei Perry is one half of the Handsome Furs, the stylish, beat-rific indie band she formed with husband Dan Boeckner (of Wolf Parade fame.) She's also a fashion icon -- check out her '50s swimwear-inspired romper (yes, that's a heart stitched on the butt), chandelier necklace, and day-glo bra -- only Perry could make half-undressed look adorable!

Funky fresh at PB+J (World Cafe Live, 5/1/09)

Who's funky-fresher: Riff, or the chick behind him with the glowing pants?

--OR-- these shoeless, percussion-ing hippie hooligans?

Sweet socks, dude!

In absence of a real post, we present: meaningless, yet hilarious hipster drivel

Faceadelphia doesn't seek out any particular fashion demographic (other than, of course, people in Philly <----a demographic in themselves!) but we were quite pleased/amused to learn that one of our photos, the infamous man-in-pajamas shot (see below) has been usurped (with credit!) by local mindblower, Fucking hipsters in Philadelphia. As far as we're concerned, it's the best photo on the site!

Says the silly caption:
Pajamas, man. I just picked up this shit at Circle Thrift to show you how thrifty I am. This pattern is fucking ugly, but maybe if I pair it with this top hat, I’ll achieve the ultimate in counterculture weirdness while I watch this Pitchfork-approved band.

Tee hee. The original site (look at this fucking hipster) is even funnier. Check it out here.

More photos soon!

The New "Gang" Uniform -- 4/7 at the Khyber

What's with girl-fronted hip-hop bands and looking like your closet threw up all over you these days? Gang are a Philly-based electro-dance band, with dueling MCs, and a whole lotta sparkles...do they have what it takes to make it work?

Le Face says yes...but only because we love headbands and glitter!

Dangerous Ponies are a local band here in Philadelphia, known for their dance-pop beats, crazy-dancing percussionists, and outlandish, colorful fashions. Check 'em out!

Fashionable Crowds (Johnny Brenda's, January-March, 2009)

Are a lot of musicians known for being well-dressed and snappily-attired? Absolutely. But sometimes the fans coming to see them are just as impressive! Here are a couple faves from the past few months...

The return of grunge: Swedish style (at the Barbary, 3/8/09)

Masshysteri are a Swedish punk band, comprised of members the Vicious, Regulations, Lost Patrol Band, Insurgent Kid, International Noise Conspiracy, and more.

They're also, it seems, purveyors of a new breed of grunge-punk: black jeans, flannel, denim shirts, studded belts.

Rock on guys!

Mt. St. Helen's Vietnam Band: Ohhhhh yess! or Ohhhh, nooooooo (At the First Unitarian Church, 3/12/09)

I know that vests are in right now, and I have somewhat of an appreciation for kitsch, but this just seems ridiculous...

Hot Tub: Hip-Hop Chic (at the Starlight Ballroom, 3/19/09)

Hot Tub are 5-piece California-based hip-hop group, whose fly tunes are accompanied by even fly-er duds. I caught them live with the Tings Tings last week, and was impressed by their sassy fashions.

Update! Update! Update! Update!

Wow, looking back, it's hard to believe it's been 5 whole months since our last update. Where does the time go?

If you're Rachel, it goes to Seattle, where our sassy, style-seeking snarkpot relocated last summer. Lucky for us all, she's still keeping dibs on what's fresh and cool: check out her finds at Emerald Streets.

A glass tree -- from le neighborhood Rachel.

Meanwhile, Kate's been grooving on a photography kick, taking photos and writing reviews for Philly.com's new hyper-music channel Phrequency. Check out her shiznit here, or cruise to Underwater Explosions for her thoughts on music, fashion, and life in the C.O.B.L.

Finally: as the worlds of music and fashion often collide, Kate will be posting photos, videos and more of fashionable singers, drummers, bass-players, bartenders and concert-goers found in and around the Philly scene. There may be a slight delay in the posting (unlike actual employers, le Face doesn't impose strict deadlines)...so keeping checking back, as we continue the magical, fashionable journey...

The Ting Tings' Katie White: fashion icon! (Kate Bracaglia for Phrequency.com)

With much love,

Rachel + Kate
